Six women, a man and a boy stand or sit in the doorway of Standard Chautauqua System located at 328 S. 12th Street in Lincoln. Curtains and shades hang in the large glass windows stenciled with: "Standard Chautauqua System" and "E.M. Avery, C.O. Bruce"; and a canopy over the storefront reads: Lyceum & Chautauqua.
According to the Lincoln City Directory, 1920, Elmer M Avery was president; J.R. Gettys, the vice president; and Charles O. Bruce, the secretary and treasurer. A lyceum could be an organization or association that provided public lectures, concerts, etc. for adult education. Chautauquas, which became commercial in 1912, similarly provided lecturers and concerts.
