Color postcard (14 x 9 cm.) with an exterior view of the southern side of the Burlington railroad depot at 925 South 10th Street in Omaha, Nebraska. In front of the depot building is a street that slopes down from 10th Street to the lower level of the depot building.
Burlington station, just south of Union Station on 10th Street, was designed by Thomas Rogers Kimball. The $350,000 Indiana limestone structure was finished just in time for the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Expo. The 10th Street entrance boasted 28 columns, each weighing 18,000 pounds. The interior iron staircase was patterned after a French Chateau. A $1 million renovation in 1930 removed the columns, creating a more classical style. The columns are now on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus near Memorial Stadium. The station was closed in 1971 and has remained vacant.
