Construction work is taking place in front of the Douglas County Courthouse, located on Harney Street between 17th and 18th Streets, in this black and white lantern slide. The street is being leveled as part of a project to lower Omaha's streets. The courthouse is a large stone building with a dome in the center. A brick building with a smokestack can be seen in the background. Several men are working in the street in front of the building, and more men as well as horses can be seen on the lawn of the courthouse.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, several street re-grading projects took place in Omaha. In certain areas, the street level was lowered. Dirt from these areas was used to raise the grade in other sections of the city.
