Description
Color postcard (14 x 9 cm) with a view captioned "Library and Art Buildg., State University, Lincoln, Neb." in red in the top right corner. The building is red brick; the portion on the left is mostly hidden behind trees; the portion to the right is more visible and appears to be about three or more stories tall with chimneys on each end. There is a paved circular drive which has the interior section landscaped with trees, lawn and shrubs. The bottom of the card has a white border.
Now known as Architectural Hall, this building is located at 11th & R in Lincoln on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, and is the oldest existing university building on the campus. It was formally dedicated in December 1895, and served as the University Library until Love Library was completed in 1945. The ground floor of the north wing was at one time assigned to the Nebraska State Historical Society. It is built of red brick and reflects the Richardsonian Romanesque style in its broad, low arches, octagonal bay, high hip roofs, wall dormers and tower. The building was completed at a cost of $110,000 and was renowned as one of the best appointed university buildings of its kind in the United States. Since 1945 it has housed the architecture department. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Source: Junior League of Lincoln, Nebraska. An Architectural Album.
