This black and white studio photograph shows Spotted Tail (Sinte Gleska) posing in front of a painted backdrop. He is wearing a white shirt, dark vest, and moccasins, and there is a blanket wrapped around his lower body. The photograph was taken at the Rosebud Reservation.
Spotted Tail was the head chief at the Rosebud Reservation. In 1880, Crow Dog, chief of police, charged him with graft before a general council. Although Spotted Tail convinced the council he was innocent, Crow Dog still considered him guilty and shot him on August 5, 1881. The Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation is located nine miles north of Valentine, Nebraska, in South Dakota.
