Historical Notes
The Institute for the Blind was opened in 1875. By the end of the 1913-1914 biennium, steel ceilings had been installed in all the rooms and hallways of this building to prevent the plaster ceilings from falling down. As of December 1, 1912, 27 male and 23 female students were in residence; on November 30, 1913, 28 males and 23 female students were enrolled. Most of the students ranged in age from six to nineteen years old, but there were a few over the age of 21. Not all of the students were totally blind--some had partial use of their eyes. Further information and statistics are available in the report.
