Nye and Schneider Company grain and lumber business
Description
The buildings of the former Nye, Colson and Company are designated in this albumen photograph as the home of the firm organized in 1890 as Nye and Schneider Company. Large white letters with the company's name appear on both the office and the metal encased grain elevator which is now labeled as elevator "A". A drayman wearing a sun helmet stands on his horse drawn wagon which is positioned on the wagon scales. Other unidentified employees stand near the office door while a planning mill wagon and its driver also awaits nearby. A wooden sign on the office building indicates the business also deals in hard and soft coal. The wooden wagon ramp leads to the grain handling area and a tree appears which is not evident in earlier views of Nye, Colson and Company.
Theron Nye and his brother-in-law Sireno B. Colson, along with the Smith brothers, J.T. and J.G., founded the firm Nye, Colson and Company in 1866. The business flourished and by March, 1890 had evolved into Nye and Schneider Company owned by Theron Nye's son, Ray, and Rudolf B. Schneider.
