Dear Umland-
I just arrived here this afternoon from Denver & [and] found your letters on Feb [February] 27 and 29, which had been sent on from Washington. I am sorry they have gone unanswered so long. I left Washington on Feb [February] 29 & [and] have been in Colorado ever since.
By now it is too late to comply with your request for a suggestion about Hist. [Historical] Records Survey job. But I shall be interested to know what you did.
Thanks for writing me about

the Guide project. With Stepp & [and] Eiseley both gone, I fear your editorial staff is too small to handle the volume of work in the time allowed. I’m glad Christiansen is working out well. But you & [and] he can’t do it all alone. Try to put as many as possible of the introductory essays by Volunteer Consultants at the University & [and] elsewhere.
Your impression of Richmond confirms my own.
What follows is confidential, to be used at your discretion (if you should be discussing the situation with Mari Sandoz, you could speak frankly to her): -- It appears that

Mr. Lawrence has written an excited letter to Senator Norris in Washington attacking me. Among other things he says that Miss S. is threatening to commit suicide. In consequence another field supervisor, Joseph Gaer (?), is being sent to Nebraska in my place. So I don’t know when I shall see you again.
But I hope you will continue to keep me somewhat informed. [stricken: My] I want to see a good Guide written for Nebraska, -- that’s all. Besides that I have pleasant personal recollections of yourself.
I expect to be here the rest of this week. Next week my
