This cabinet card photograph of the New York Hotel in Fremont, Nebraska, clearly shows elements of the French Second Empire architectural style. The brick structure is crowned with a mansard roof along with double towers and cupolas. Dormer windows with surrounds and the heavily bracketed eaves are other Second Empire features. Additional architectural details include balconies with wood and iron railings, multiple brick chimneys, and a cast iron store front. Men and children gather near the corner entrance while women may be seen on balconies. Two African Americans, possibly hotel employees, appear in the distance. A decorative, four-sided wooden street sign denoting "New York Hotel" appears on the corner. Sapling trees, a tin street lamp, a utility pole and the imposing brick edifice suggest a town is losing its frontier status.
