This 4" x 6" black and white photograph shows the view from the southeast of the Lucius Dunbar Richards and Carro Richards residence, located at 810 East Fifth Street in Fremont, Nebraska. White paint and classically styled columns help create a simplified and more modern appearance for this former Victorian style dwelling. Scroll-sawn ornamentation in the gables and brackets on the two story bay window are blended into the walls with the use of white paint rather than painted with contrasting colors as in former days. The lathed spindles used in the porch railing are likely original to the home but the simple columns replace former examples which would have been more elaborate in design. Electric lines enter the home on the front of the gable. A number of rockers and other chairs sit on the front porch, and a hammock is also visible. A cast iron mail box hangs on the wall near the front door. The steps approaching the front entrance are constructed of concrete blocks and poured concrete. These replace the original steps of wood. Wooden lattice work encloses the base of the raised porch. The home is seated on a brick foundation and has basement windows. A porch at the rear of the house is enclosed with fly screens and it is approached by wooden steps. A wooden lawn bench stands nearby. A carriage barn with a louvered cupola is visible at the back of the residence. It is of frame construction and is also painted white. Vines and flowers are planted nearby. Shade trees and a grassy lawn frame this peaceful scene.
