This image shows the interior of the smoking room at Westfield Acres, the residence of Frank and Jessie Fowler, located at 1217 North Nye Avenue in Fremont, Nebraska. The room is outfitted for comfort with upholstered window seats, a spindled Morris chair and an over-stuffed, leather covered rocking chair. Simple curtain panels, a patterned area carpet, and papered walls lend an informal air to the room. The ornate Morris chair contrasts with the straight lines of the craftsman style influences seen in the oak wall paneling and in the unusual oak fire place mantle with it curved top, carved panels and tiled front. Framed prints or photographs with simple black frames along with some primitive weapons decorate the walls. The prominent, exposed steam pipe spoils the effect of the unique ceiling light fixture. Additional incandescent lighting is supplied by several wall sconces with exposed round light bulbs. A cast iron steam radiator is the heat source.
The 16-acre property at 1217 Nye Avenue in Fremont, Nebraska, was purchased by Frank Fowler from Edward Blewett in 1903. The former Blewett residence was drastically remodeled into a 32-room mansion, while the surrounding grounds were transformed to include the stable, a poultry house, and a gardener's residence. The architect secured for the major building project was Alfred C. Clas of Ferry and Clas, architects of the 1893 World's Fair. The estate was razed in 1958.
