This 7.5" x 9.5" photograph shows the well manicured south formal gardens of The Elms, the residence of Ray and Anna Nye, located at 1643 North Nye Avenue in Fremont, Nebraska. Ray Nye is posed at the center of the image just to the left of the concrete bird bath. His wife, Anna, is standing near the flowering bushes which flank the latticed grape arbor. The reflection of the Nye's Neoclassical residence can be glimpsed on the mirrored gazing ball prominently featured in the immediate foreground. Gravel walkways, which are laid out north and south as well as east and west, intersect at right angles. Flower beds parallel to the walkways are surrounded by a carefully trimmed grass lawn. Symmetrically arranged garden plantings include shrubs, bushes, sculptured evergreens, varieties of flowers, and what possibly might be tree peonies. A lilac hedge serves as a screen at the south end of the garden. Concrete urns on pedestals mark the east approach to the garden. Visible to the far south are a concrete bench and a concrete based sun dial. Numerous elm trees appear in the distance as does the north elevation of the William Fried residence.
