Main Street appears as a dirt avenue in this circa 1890 black and white photographic print. Numerous business houses are evident in this scene where a parade progresses north. Men in suits and uniforms take the lead while a large contingency of children approaches as they follow a male flag bearer. Spectators line the street on either side while some prefer to observe from second story windows. Several American flags have been put out for the occasion. The building with the white awning seen on the right side of the street is the City Hotel. Two doors down, we see the mansard roof and tower of the New York Hotel at Fourth and Main. Farther south, the onion shaped dome of the Commercial National Bank is just visible and beyond it is the square cupola of the Ruwe Block. Horses and buggies are seen at intervals as are three trade signs in the shape of large pocket watches. The signs indicate the locations of watch repair shops or jewelers. A tin street lamp is noted at the left hand corne of the print. Nearby, in the center of the group, a small boy wearing a straw hat gazes up at the photographer who has just made the exposure.
