The First Presbyterian Church of Fairmont originated on May 14, 1871, when a group of pioneers met in a sod house south of the present site of Fairmont. At this meeting, Reverend Erastis Spear, a Baptist minister from Indiana, preached what is believed to be the first sermon in Fillmore County. On February 21, 1872, the church was formally organized with 13 charter members. It was decided that the church would be built in the newly planned town of Fairmont.
