This 7" x 3-7/8" black and white photograph shows ammunition dump, D-101, at the Sioux Army Depot. A dirt berm camouflages the pit and its concrete doorway as well as helping to divert the blast in case of accidental detonation.
The Sioux Army Depot was established March 23, 1942, on 19,771 acres off of Highway 30 some seven miles west of Sidney, Nebraska. The depot warehoused and distributed ammunition and general supplies. Thirty-five farm families were forced to move to make way for the Depot. Office, barracks and family housing units along with other Army buildings were built as needed. The depot was deactivated on June 30, 1967.
