This 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" black and white photograph shows a five-story brick building in the middle of a block. A large vertical sign hanging from the building reads "Hardy's Furniture" and a sign near the top of the building reads "Furniture, Carpets, Hardware." The building has large windows on the first floor with a concrete awning overhanging them. A sidewalk runs in front of the building, and there are cars parked on the street. "Hardy Furniture Co." is written on the photograph.
The Hardy Furniture Company was founded in 1871. The company moved into a pair of three-story buildings at 1314 O Street in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1907, then in 1915 commissioned Fiske & Meginnis to design a two-story addition. By the time of this photograph in 1928, the company could advertise itself as "Lincoln's Oldest and Largest Furniture Store" noting "For three generations the buying public of Lincoln and Nebraska has looked to Hardy's for quality home furnishings at the lowest prices consistent with good merchandising." The building is still (2013) extant but the facade has been thoroughly remodeled twice, in 1980 and in 2009.
