Recollections
Chapter 1
About two weeks ago, the Garden County News office called and asked if I would consider accepting a project concerning my personal remembrances of different businesses in Oshkosh, beginning at the time I came to Oshkosh in 1910. My first thought was "No Way." But as I thought of the community advantages that might develop from such a project, I decided to attempt it.
When I called back to say that I would accept the challenge, I explained that I would do it under one condition. That condition is, that it would also become a community project, to attempt to get a written record of the Oshkosh businesses from 1920 to the present time - 1984. We have a record from 1885 to 1920. Not complete, perhaps, but at least a written record, in the Volume II of Grant L. Shumway's "History of Western Nebraska and Its People."
By the way, any information that anyone can furnish that is not in that Shumway History will be appreciated. For example, it doesn't give information as to what the "Opera House" was used for, from the time the G.C.H.S. boys and girls used it for basketball practice and games during the years 1914-1920, until the frame Ag Gymnasium Building was built west of the "Old Frame High School" building in 1921. We know that a family lived in the Opera House (partitions were constructed to form rooms), but no one seems to know the exact dates.
During the last few years several people have talked to me, wondering why there hasn't been a written record of the progress of Oshkosh. Some have suggested that I do it. I don't feel that I am capable of handling such a complicated project, I but I can help by getting information and filing it for future use. Surely someone will be able to use the filed information and get a history written.
I have talked to several people about the project and have asked them to help, by making a written record of what they can remember about what businesses were where and when. They have I been cooperative, and I have high hopes that enough information will become available that can ' be used to get the "History of Businesses in Oshkosh, Nebraska" project started.
It will be impossible for me to talk or write to all the people who have this necessary knowledge, so, any of you people who can furnish information, please, please do write it down and send or give it to me. I will file all the reports, using the person's last name -such as "information written by John Smith" filed under S in the file, etc. Then, later, someone will be able to compile a file with the name of the businesses and their history, in alphabetical order.
Of course there will be different opinions about dates, people and places, so there will just have to be discussions, so that we can come to logical conclusions about what is the "true story."
I will have the first part of my contributions ready soon, and will be able to carry out my end of the bargain.
